Obscure words - tell me something tuesday

Book no-no’s: Tell Me Something Tuesday

My favourite day of the week as it’s another Tell Me Something Tuesday (day)! I’m loving this week’s prompt. I’m a little weird when it comes to buying books as I rarely read the blurb properly until I finish the book..

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post on Rainy Day Ramblings where a wide range of topics is being discussed from books to blogging. This week’s theme:

What are things that make you steer clear of a book?

Now, the fact I love thrillers is not a surprise to any of you by now, but what you don’t know is what makes me not get the book, so here is the list of some of the things that make me steer clear of a book:

🐾 An author  who’s book I’ve read before but did not enjoy

It’s unlikely I will pick up another book by the author who’s book I have already read and did not enjoy.

🐾 Unclear Book Cover and/or Title

As I mentioned above – I don’t normally read the blurb at the back of the book properly. I’m too scared for spoilers, haha! So the cover needs to catch my eye and have some key words on it. Such as psychological thriller, missing, murder or title that insinuates something along the line. If it doesn’t then… you’re out of luck.

🐾 Bad Reviews

Other people’s opinions are so important when it comes to picking (or in this case, not picking) your next read. If the book has prominently bad reviews, I will not be wasting my time. Yes, people have different opinions and they may not match mine. However, my to-be-read list is big enough to not waste time with books that have been rated below average by many fellow book friends.

🐾 Large number of pages

I’m a slow reader. English isn’t my first language and I’m therefore even slower than others. If a book is over 600 pages, I will walk past it and not look back once.

In summary, I’m an impulse buyer and if the book doesn’t catch my eye first with the title and cover, and I know that there have been bad reviews or it’s just too big (apologies for the innuendo!) I will be running for the hills.

What makes you leave a book in the store/library? Let me know in the comments below, and make sure you go check out Rainy Day Ramblings for their answers.
